08-Aug-2025Orthopedic Injuries involve the musculoskeletal system that include bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. These injuries are either acute (immediate, such as fractures) or chronic (they take time to develop, such as tendinitis).
Bone Breakage (Fractures)
Dislocations
Sprains
Strains
Ruptured Ligaments /tendons
Typical ones: ACL tear (knee), rotator cuff tear. (shoulder)
Tendinitis
Bursitis
Cartilage Injuries
Spinal Injuries
Overuse Injuries
Repetitive stress injury- usually due to fatigue caused by repetitive stress (e.g. runner knee)
Orthopedic injury treatment is necessary to help with the correct healing process, relieving pain and restoring mobility. The management relies on the type, intensity, and the place of the injury.
The majority of minor orthopedic injuries call for the use of R.I.C.E. protocol:
R- Rest
Use the opposite part to prevent more damage.
I - Ice
To alleviate pain and swelling, apply ice on a 2-3 hour interval, 15-20min each time.
C- Compression
Using an elastic dressing such as an elastic bandage/brace will help limit swelling and stabilize the area.
E -Elevation
Swelling can be reduced by maintaining the injured part higher than the heart.

Non-Surgical Treatments
Surgical (incase it is required)

ORIF- Open Reduction and Internal Fixation:
Binds broken bones by using screws, plates or rods to re-align them and fix them
External Fixation:
Metal pins and frame stabilize bone out of the body, and they are applicable in open wounds
Joint re-Construction and Replacement:
When trauma causes the destruction of joints that cannot be repaired (hip or knee replacement)
Spine Surgery:
The unstable vertebral fractures can be seen in spinal cord compression.
Soft Tissue Repair:
Grafting, reconstruction of the tendons/ligaments, closing of wounds
A fracture is a break in the continuity of a bone, most commonly due to trauma, overuse, or disease such as osteoporosis. Successful treatment of a fracture involves an attempt to reposition the bone, healing, and recovery of function.
