What are the different types of IVF treatment?
IVF procedure depends on the type of the procedure being performed.
Conventional IVF: In conventional IVF, the eggs are obtained by placing a needle into the woman's ovaries and then fertilized with sperm within a laboratory dish. After fertilization happens, they are cultured for a few days, and then transferred into the woman's uterus.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection: In ICSI the sperm from a donor is injected into an egg to help fertilisation. It is particularly helpful to men with problems so severe that their sperm count is low and/or their sperm motility is poor or sperm shapes are abnormal.
Egg Donation IVF: In this IVF, the eggs come from a donor (someone with healthy ovaries) not the patient herself. Once this happens, the eggs are fertilised with sperm from the partner or sperm from the donor sperm. Then the embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus.
Frozen Embryo Transfer: FET is transferring previously frozen embryos (from a previous IVF cycle) into the uterus. That can be done if there were unused embryos from a previous IVF cycle that were frozen for future use.
IVF with Sperm Donor: If the male partner is unable to provide sperm, however, the eggs are fertilized with sperm from a donor. The sperm will be from a sperm bank.
