08-Aug-2025Ovarian cancer surgery is an essential aspect of treatment for the majority of ovarian cancer stages. It consists of removing cancerous tissue and can also involve other treatments such as chemotherapy or targeted therapy. The purpose of surgery varies with the stage of cancer—both diagnosis and staging in the initial cases or cytoreduction (tumor debulking) in advanced cases.
Unilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy
Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy
Total Hysterectomy
Omentectomy
Omentectomy, a fatty layer in the abdomen which is frequently involved by ovarian cancer
Lymph Node Dissection
Pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes are removed for staging and for looking for spread
Debulking Surgery (Cytoreductive Surgery)
Surgical Approach
Length of Operation
Usually 3–6 hours, based on how extensive the cancer is and what procedure is performed
Recovery Period
The rate of the surgery of the ovarian cancer in India may change significantly, depending upon various factors. Here is a point-by-point description of what has an influence on pricing and what to remember:
Influences on Cost:
Stage & Complexity of Cancer
Nature of Surgery Needed
Simple operations such as total hysterectomy or oophorectomy will cost less than the one involving several organs and peritonectomy
Hospital & Location
Charitable or teaching hospitals are much cheaper as compared to elite private hospitals. Metros such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore tend to be more expensive as compared to tier-2 cities
Fees of Surgeon
More experienced gynecologic oncologists or surgical teams cost more, but could result in improved outcomes, and fewer complications
Room Type & Hospital Stay
The choice of exclusive or luxury rooms increases the cost. Long hospital stints caused by entanglement increase hospital bills too
Radiology Tests & Imaging
The pre-surgery expenses such as CT/PET scans, blood tests (ex. CA-125) or pathology intra-operatively have a great part to play
Also influencing the final cost are anaesthesia, post-surgical medications, supportive care (physiotherapy; nutrition), and follow-ups. The most significant costs are those incurred in post-surgical meds.
Chemotherapy & High Need Therapy
When more than one course of chemotherapy (or newer targeted therapies such as PARP inhibitors, immunotherapy) is needed, the cost can become quite high.
Artemis Cancer Centre is multidisciplinary; it has a combination of all three-medical, surgical and radiation oncology under a roof. The cancers like ovarian, endometrial, and cervical in the hospital are targeted by the Gynecologic Oncology department that offers special treatment tracks. Artemis has modern diagnostic and surgical equipment, including the usage of Robotic Da Vinci systems, CyberKnife, PET-CT, MRI-3T, IGRT and the development of precise, minimally invasive surgery. Services available at the facility include daycare chemotherapy centre, pain management clinic, telemedicine facilities, rehabilitative care and counselling services (such as genetic and financial counselling). Advanced diagnostics technologies, namely nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, and a blood component therapy unit support the end-to-end cancer treatment.
The Department of Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology at Medanta provides comprehensive care, which extends through early diagnosis and treatment, surgery, HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy), genetic assessment, and onco-fertility preservation as a part of a comprehensive, patient-oriented, multi-disciplinary care model. Dr. Aravind is one among the first institutions in India to use surgical system da Vinci to conduct gynecologic surgery to provide precision and faster recovery. Modern technologies: HIPEC capabilities are provided in advanced interventions of an ovarian cancer. Designed with state-of-the-art imaging such as TrueBeam linear accelerators, CyberKnife 124, 3T MRI, 256-slice CT, and PET-CT to make accurate diagnosis and staging. All cases are discussed by a tumor board made up of sphere of specialists in surgery, medical and radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and genetic counselling-and provide individualized, multidisciplinary treatment planning.
The institute has a special Centre of Gynaecologic Oncology where it provides total cancer care to the female reproductive cancer, including ovarian cancer. A wide range of services is offered in this center: robotic surgery, radical and ultra‑radical procedures, HIPEC, and PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy). The top surgical and diagnosis technology available in the hospital consists of robotic surgery, the latest radiation therapy equipment and systems (MR Linac, IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, and stereotactic capabilities), and a new OT complex.
Max Saket accommodates the Max Institute of Cancer Care, which has multi-modal cancer care in the form of surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology department teams. They focus on a comprehensive form of treatment, which mixes surgery, chemo, radiology, and targeted treatment. The one of the first to install technologies like Novalis Tx in IMRT/ IGRT, HIPEC and SRS/SRT in northern India. With the Da Vinci XI robotic system, this helps to carry out minimally invasive and exact operations, such as the difficult individual cases of gynaecological diseases, such as ovarian cancer.
Dr. Rupinder Sekhon is one of the leading gynaecologic oncologists of the country with special interest in ovarian cancer and cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC in recurrent ovarian cancer. She has a large number of surgeries in cervical and endometrial cancer under her credit. She has been instrumental in developing the department of gynae oncology to the state of the art in the country which is inclusive of colposcopy, laparoscopy, and hysteroscopy, open and robotic gynaecologic surgeries. She is a Certified Robotic Console Surgeon since 2011 and has performed a large number of robotic surgeries for all kinds of gynae cancers.
Dr. Sabhyata Gupta is the first gynaecologist in India to perform robotic gynaecological surgery for cancerous and benign (non-cancerous) gynaecological conditions; Dr. Gupta’s numerous specializations include gynae oncology, colposcopy, advanced gynae laparoscopy, robotic surgery and hysteroscopy.
Dr. Rama Joshi has been instrumental in the development of gynecologic oncology in India. Dr. Joshi is presently Director of Gynae Oncology and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon. Dr. Rama Joshi has over 25 years of expertise. She is one of the India's most committed gynaecological cancer surgeons.
Dr. Kanika Batra Modi has over 15 years of practice and deals with gynaecologic oncology, complex benign diseases, robotic, and endoscopic surgeries. She has done well over a thousand surgeries and is an expert in handling ovarian, uterine cervical, vulvar and more complex operations.
Surgery in advanced ovarian cancer in India is a very important aspect of treatment to cut off as much of the cancer as possible which is termed as cytoreductive surgery (CRS) or debulking surgery. The presence of quality oncologists, state-of-art hospitals and low prices has made India a center of attraction where people travel around the globe to get this surgery done.
