Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) refers to a fertility procedure whereby specially prepared sperm are directly introduced into the uterus of a woman during or around ovulation in order to enhance the likelihood of pregnancy. • Usually normal activities can be reinstated the same day.

• Partner/donor gives a sample of the semen.

Sample gets sperm washed:

• Expels seminal fluid and sperm that is immobile.
• Precious, active sperm.

Insemination Procedure

• A slender and pliable catheter is inserted where the prepared sperm is introduced directly into the uterus.
• Procedure is rapid (5-10 minutes) and is not painful (as with a Pap smear).
• No anaesthesia is needed.

Post-Procedure

• Woman may rest for 15–30 minutes.
• Normalization may then resume.
• A little mild cramping or spotting may take place.

Luteal Phase Support

• In rare cases progesterone supplements may be given to aid implantation.

Pregnancy Test

• Approximately 2 weeks later a blood test is performed to establish pregnancy.
