19-Feb-2025A varicocele is a clinical condition in which the veins of the scrotal sac in which the testes are placed become swollen. These are blood vessels of the spermatic cord and when they dilate, and then one gets to see varicose veins as those that develop on the legs. Varicoceles can be observed in almost every second male person and they are normally found on the left side of the scrotum. This condition may result in pain or discomfort in the scrotum, hence many will refer it as a dull pain or a feeling of a full scrotum. Occasionally, varicoceles can be asymptomatic and go unnoticed as they do not come with any related symptoms. Varicocele is also evident to be related to infertility in some men since it leads to an increased temperature in the affected testicle which may consequently have an effect on sperm reproduction. It is recommended that there are options as surgical or non-surgical, based on the type of the problem and its manifestation.
The best treatment for varicocele depends on the degree of this condition, the presence of signs, and whether a man is having problems with fertility. Below are the main approaches taken in treating varicocele:
Non-Surgical Treatments
Non-surgical managements include use of analgesic drugs and wearing comfortable under-wear for relief of pain and feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.
Surgical Treatments
Varicocele should be managed by surgery if the condition results to pain, impaired fertility or any other associated problems. Some of the available treatments are varicocelectomy, the ligation of the veins, and microsurgery. In non-surgical treatment, a catheter is inserted into the vein to trickle a substance whereby the vein supplying the affected area is blocked and hence the varicocele reduces in size.
Lifestyle Adjustments
More important lifestyle changes include avoiding heat and keeping scrotum area cooler, and also maintaining proper weights and exercising to reduce varicoceles development and promote circulation.
Infertility Treatment
For treating infertility in men with varicocele, varicocele repair through varicocelectomy or embolization should be considered since varicocele reverses the sperm abnormalities and improves the probability of conception.

Varicocele is normally diagnosed through physical examination, ultrasound and in some cases other tests to check fertility. This is the general format of diagnosis as follows:
Varicocelectomy: The common surgical interventions that requires constriction or cutting of the problematic veins in order to reverse the blockage of blood flow. This can be done either through the open approach, endoscopic approach or a microscopic approach.
Microsurgical varicocelectomy: This is a better way compared to the ligar transit because the surgeon uses a microscope while operating and only deals with veins of the affected region without harming adjacent tissues. People do it less often than the traditional open surgery, and as a result, the chances of such a procedure reoccurring is rare with fewer complications.
Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy: A form of varicocele surgery that does not require large incisions or openings, the surgeon uses a camera that is attached to a few small incisions throughout the procedure. It also boasts of shorter recovery time making the left behind scar to be almost invisible.
Varicocele Embolization: This is a procedure where a catheter is inserted into the vein in order to block the varicocele veins using a substance such as a coil. This acts to change the blood flow to better veins. These types of treatments usually favor male clients who would much rather have the procedure performed than invasive surgery within a shorter amount of time.
Since varicocele is classified based on the degree of the disease, the symptoms are also highly diverse. In many instances, patients with varicoceles will remain asymptomatic and the condition may be diagnosed during an ordinary physical examination or probing the cause of male infertility. However, when symptoms do occur, they can include:
