See Clearly, Heal Better: Affordable Fluoroscopy Scans Overseas

Fluoroscopy scans

Fluoroscopy is a form of medical imaging which involves the use of continuous X-rays to create real time moving images of the structures within the body. It is said to be an X-ray movie.

What is Fluoroscopy?

  • A diagnostic method of imaging the body in motion (organ movement, blood flow, contrast dye, tools used in procedure).
  • Makes use of a fluoroscope (source of X-rays + fluorescent screen + detector).
  • May be taken down to be reviewed later.

Fluoroscopy test

Fluoroscopy test is a medical imaging test where inside of your body real-time moving images are created using a constant stream of X-rays. It enables the physician to view the organs, bones and soft tissues in action-almost live just like a video but not just a snapshot as in the case of a typical X-ray.

What is a Fluoroscopy Test?

  • A diagnostic test or guidance test in which a fluoroscope machine (X-ray source + detector) develops a continuous image.
  • It is commonly done using contrast agents (such as the barium or iodine dye) to enhance the visibility of some body parts.
  • Either as a standalone diagnostic test or at a procedure (e.g., catheter positioning, joint injections).

Most popular Fluoroscopy Tests

  • Barium Swallow / Upper GI Test- to examine the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and swallowing.
  • Barium Enema - to examine the colon and rectum.
  • Angiography - to see the blood vessels with contrast staining.
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG) - to examine uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)- to observe the bladder performance during urination.
  • Orthopedic Fluoroscopy- to direct fracture reduction or joint injections.
  • Cardiac Fluoroscopy - to direct stents, pacemaker deployment or catheter insertions.

Fluoroscopy procedure

The following is an easy breakdown of the fluoroscopy procedure in case you are unsure of the step by step procedure:

Before the Procedure

It depends on the type of test:

  • In GI studies (barium swallow/enema/ upper GI) fasting 4-8 before.
  • In the case of angiography or urinary studies - you might require instructions to hydrate and kidney functioning tests.
  • Eliminate metallic (jewellery, belts, hairpins) and interfering objects due to imaging.

Inform the doctor about:

  • Pregnancy or possible pregnancy.
  • Having kidney issues (using contrast)
  • Allergies (in particular, iodine contrast)

During the Procedure

Positioning

  • You are lying on an X-ray table and the fluoroscope (where the X-ray is generated and where the X-ray is detected and where the X-ray is monitored).
  • The table can be tilted or moved depending on the test.

Contrast Administration (as required)

  • Swallowed (barium of GI tract)
  • Placed into a vein/artery (iodine contrast with angiography, heart research)
  • Inserted into bladder [vcug] or uterus/fallopian tubes [hsg].

Real-Time Imaging

  • Images are seen live through a monitor by the radiologist or the physician.

They may ask you to:

  • Hold your breath briefly
  • Swallow liquid
  • Change position (turn/ stand/ lie differently)

Procedural Guidance (where there is interventional)

  • Physicians can apply fluoroscopy to direct catheters, stents, injections or biopsy needles.
  • Real time tracking is done to track movements.

After the Procedure

  • With surgery, or big intervention, you can typically go home the same day (except when you are having surgery).

If contrast was given:

  • Take more fluids that will wash it out.
  • Uncommon side effects: occasional nausea, rash, or dizziness (report serious side effects at once).

If barium was used:

  • Temporary constipation or chalky stools can be to be expected one or two days.

Duration

  • Diagnostic fluoroscopy: 15-45 minutes.
  • Interventional procedures 1-3 hours (complexity-dependent)

Fluoroscopy imaging

Fluoroscopy imaging is a form of medical imaging that offers real-time moving images of the internal body in X-rays, rather than a still image, like a video shot. It is popular in the diagnosis and in the guidance during the process of medical procedure.

What is Fluoroscopy Imaging?

  • Scans continuous or pulsed X-ray beam through use of a detector and monitor to produce dynamic images.
  • Enables physicians to view organs, joints or tools in motion.
  • Record images or videotape to review later.

How It Works?

  • Radiation is introduced into the body by X-ray source.
  • Transmitted rays are captured on detector/ fluorescent screen.
  • Picture is transferred to a monitor as a live video.
  • The contrast agents (barium, iodine) can also be employed to increase the visibility of blood vessels, GI tract, or urinary system.

Factors Affecting Fluoroscopy scan cost in India

The price of a fluoroscopy scan in India may be very different depending on a variety of factors. The following is a list of the major factors that affect the price:

Fluoroscopy Type of Procedure

  • Diagnostic Fluoroscopy: The price usually varies according to the city and healthcare center.
  • Interventional Fluoroscopy: More complex and skilled procedures, such as guided injections, biopsies or catheter placements, are generally more expensive.

Healthcare Facility Type

  • Government Hospitals: These usually are cheaper in nature and might be government-subsidized.
  • Privatized Hospitals and Diagnostic Centers: May may have a higher fee because they are equipped better, have more advanced equipment and less waiting time.
  • Corporate Hospitals: These were the most expensive, with high-quality services and facilities.

Geographical Location

  • Metro Cities: Cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai tend to be expensive because of demand and operating cost.
  • Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities: Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities typically have lower rates but the facilities might not be as good.

Use of Contrast Agents

  • Some of the procedures that involve the use of contrast dyes (e.g., iodine or barium) may be costly since they involve the cost of the contrast material, as well as increased monitoring.

Technological Advancements

  • Hospitals that have invested in high-end fluoroscopy equipment (e.g. digital or remote-controlled) might charge a higher price to recover the cost of the equipment.

Additional Services

  • The prices can be higher when the procedure involves other services such as radiologist visits, preparation of a report or aftercare.
