Root Canal Therapy Treatment
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is a treatment used for repairing and saving a tooth which has been infected or has badly decayed. During a root canal treatment, the pulp and nerve are being removed and the inside of the tooth is sealed and cleaned. Without the help of the root canal therapy, the tissue which surrounds the tooth may result in the formation of the abscesses and the tooth may also become infected.
What is Root Canal?
A root canal is a treatment used for repairing and saving a tooth which has been infected or has badly decayed. During a root canal treatment, the pulp and nerve are being removed and the inside of the tooth is sealed and cleaned. Without the help of the root canal therapy, the tissue which surrounds the tooth may result in the formation of the abscesses and the tooth may also become infected.
The root canal is the term used for describing the natural cavity that occurs within the center of the tooth. The pulp chamber or pulp is the soft site present within the root canal. The tooth's nerve exists within the root canal.
A tooth's nerve is not vitally important to a tooth's function and health after the tooth has risen through the gums. Tooth’s nerve has only one function which is sensory, the tooth nerve provides the sensation of cold or hot. The absence or presence of a nerve will not be affecting the daily functioning of the tooth.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
The root canal is not a treatment, but only a part of a tooth. Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment, root canal therapy, or endodontic therapy) is a hollow section of a tooth that holds blood vessels, the nerve tissue, and other cells, also called as the pulp. A tooth consists of roots and crown. The crown is usually above the gum, while the roots are below the crown. The roots are the link between the teeth to the jawbone. Inside the root and the crown, or the root canal, the pulp is present. The pulp provides nourishment to the tooth and gives moisture to the surrounding material. The nerves in the pulp sense cold and hot temperatures as the pain.
Reason for the Root canal Treatment:
When the pulp or the tooth's nerve tissue damaged, it breaks down and bacteria starts to multiply within the pulp chamber. The bacteria and other decayed debris can result in the abscessed tooth or in an infection. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that is being formed at the end of the roots of the patient’s tooth. An abscess results when the infection spread all across the tooth and through the ends of the roots of the tooth. In addition to an abscess, an infection in the root canal of a tooth can result in the following:
- Embed Asset Override
- Swelling that may spread to other sites of the head, face, or neck
- Loss of bone around the tip of the root of the tooth
- Drainage problems expanding outward from the root
- A hole that can be resulted through the side of the tooth with drainage through the check or into the gums, with drainage into the skin through the skin.
Procedure for the Root Canal Therapy:
Root canal treatment is performed in three steps, and it usually takes between one to three sessions for completion.
Cleansing of the root canal: First of all the dentist removes everything that is present inside the root canal. With the patient placed under the local anesthesia, the dentist makes a small hole on the surface of the tooth and thus removing the dead pulp tissue and diseased tissue with the help of small files.
Filling of the root canal: Next, the dentist cleans shapes and decontaminates the hollow site, using tiny files and irrigation solutions. Then, the tooth is filled with the help of a rubber-like material, using adhesive cement for sealing the canals completely. After root canal therapy, the tooth is dead. The patient will no longer feel any pain in that tooth because the nerve tissue has been removed, and the infection has been eliminated.
Adding a crown or filling: By adding a crown or filling the tooth will now be more fragile than it was before. A tooth with no pulp must receive its nourishment from the ligament that links the tooth to the bone. This supply is adequate, but in time, the tooth will become more brittle, so a filling or a crown offers protection. Until the filling or crown is complete, the patient should not bite or chew on the tooth. Once there is a filling or crown is performed, the person can use the tooth as before they have been using.
Treatment usually takes only one appointment, but if there are multi- canals, curved canals, or large infections, this could require at least two additional appointments.
What are the risks involved?
Like with any other surgery, there are bound to occur some complications:
- Sometimes the dentist only finds three root canals in a tooth but the tooth has four canal roots. If one of the canals is left untreated, the infection will persist and spread into the bone.
- The dentist must also make sure that the filling material goes far enough into the canal, to fill it up. If the root canal is not properly sealed, the infection could return back to the patients.
- During the surgery, the root of the tooth may crack, or the instruments can break in the canal or perforate the canal. This can make it hard to fill the tooth properly.
If complications do occur, a specialist can try to correct the problem and thus completing the root canal. To avoid any complications, the patients should always follow the dentist's instructions. If an antibiotic is required, it is very important to finish the entire prescription. It is very important to have a permanent restoration placed, such as a crown, once the root canal therapy is perfectly complete.
