What is an arm lift?
An arm lift which is technically known as a brachioplasty, alters and enhances the appearance of a patient’s upper arms. It happens most often to:
- Take away the extra skin and fat that is found between the underarm and elbow.
- Insert a supporting suture under the skin so it can be snugged and mold the curvature of the arm.
- Tighten loose skin around the upper arms due to weight loss, aging or a group of people’s tendency to have such skin.
There are several kinds of Arm lift procedures:
- Mini Arm lift: Small Incision beneath the armpit for minor sagging.
- Traditional Arm Lift: If the sagging is major, a long cut is made from the armpit to the elbow.
- Extended Arm Lift: Surgical cut is drawn along the side of the chest if there is significant loose skin.
- Liposuction: It is used for people who have uneven body fat and great skin elasticity.
Arm lift Surgery Cost
The cost of Arm lift surgery is $3,200.
Arm lift Before and After
An arm lift improves the looks of your upper arms. You can see here what happens in both stages:
Before Arm Lift
Appearance:
- “Batwing” or sagging skin on the upper arms.
- Loose skin that results from aging, losing weight or family genes.
- There are some places that store stubborn fat that do not decrease no matter how much you eat healthy or exercise.
Concerns:
- Being embarrassed about showing my underarms in sleeveless outfits.
- Skin irritation caused by the excess skin rubbing.
- A weak definition or lack of muscular tone in the upper arms.
Preparation:
- Getting medical evaluations and having lab tests performed.
- Don’t smoke (since it supports your recovery).
- Try to avoid taking particular medications (such as blood thinners).
- Make sure to talk to your surgeon about what to reasonably expect with the procedure.
After Arm Lift
Appearance:
- Less flabby, smoother and firmer upper arms.
- A great deal of the excess skin and fat is reduced.
- Better shape and balance of the arms.
Scarring:
- Often, a scar is positioned from the armpit down to the elbow (the area depends on the surgical method used).
- It may become less visible as time passes and using special care or treatments can help lower its appearance.
Results:
- Lasting for a long time is likely if you maintain the same amount of weight.
- Muscles become stronger and the arms look more youthful.
- Wearing fitted or sleeveless clothes can boost confidence
Recovery:
- Swelling and bruising will be present in the first 1–2 weeks.
- Resume gentle movement around the house after a few days; go back to regular activities after about 4–6 weeks.
- Seeing the final outcome takes about 2–3 months.
Arm lift Recovery Time
Recovery after an arm lift (brachioplasty) takes around 4 to 6 weeks, but the full recovery may require several more months. Let’s go over the average timeline for the process you should expect:
Week 1: Immediate recovery
-
Most cases include: Swelling, some bruising or redness, tightening and pain that is usually mild to moderate.
To do the exercise:
- It helps to lift your arms above the swollen area.
- Put on the compression garments when and as instructed.
- Never lift, stretch or move your arms above where your shoulders are.
- Use the pain reliever and antibiotic (when needed), exactly as directed.
Week 2-3: Early Healing
- The swelling and bruising start to reduce in size.
- Sutures might be removed or simply dissolve after a certain period.
- Walking is allowed, but not any heavy activities like lifting.
- A vast majority of patients go back to regular work within 10–14 days after surgery.
Week 4-6: Moderate exercises
- Begin doing gentle exercises (after surgeon’s guidance).
- Start doing your usual activities step by step.
- Scars are healing, even though they can still be seen.
- Compression garments are sometimes still part of the care.
2-3 Months: Full Recovery
- Arms feel stronger.
- There is very little swelling left.
- Although scars are not fully gone, they slowly fade and it may take up to 1 year to reach final appearance.
- Only resume your workout routine and weight lifting after the surgeon gives you the go-ahead.
Arm lift for Sagging Skin
An arm lift (brachioplasty) aims to fix the loose or excess skin that can be seen on the upper arms which is sometimes called bat wings. A great choice for surgery, it suits people with considerable weight loss, who are getting older or have genes that cause loose skin.
Why Opt for an Arm Lift to Fix Sagging Skin?
- Gets rid of the skin that is hanging between the armpit and the elbow.
- Corrects uneven areas of the arm by adding stronger support to the tissue.
- Together with liposuction, helps to remove excess fat.
- You get arms that are stronger and toned, conforming more to the rest of your body shape.
Arm lift vs Liposuction
Arm lift
- When skin on the upper arms is loose or saggy because of weight loss, age or family history, an arm lift (brachioplasty) is performed.
- Excess skin is removed and the underlying tissue is tightened to change and improve the look of the arm.
- Taking out fat tissue may also be part of the procedure, if that is what is needed.
- To perform an arm lift, a surgeon cuts longer incisions starting at the armpit and ending just below the elbow.
- The scar can be seen, but it becomes less noticeable with time and surgeons often try to hide it.
- After an arm lift, patients are given about 2 to 4 weeks to let their arms recover, following which they should avoid lifting, stretching or working out strenuously.
- Since scars and swelling decrease a few months after surgery, the full results take some time to appear.
- Having lost a lot of weight, patients may find that arm lifts make a big difference.
- They work by lifting and shaping the arms so they look fitter and smoother.
- A longer scar and a need for more downtime is the downside.
Liposuction
- Liposuction mainly addresses removing extra fat in the upper arms.
- It suits those whose skin is taut and does not have any noticeable sagging.
- Liposuction does not help with loose skin which is why it could result in skin that looks more stretched or loose.
- Only very small cuts are made to insert the cannula which takes out the unwanted fat in your body.
- Most of the cuts are tiny and usually unnoticeable.
- Even so, it has no effect on lax skin which is why it is best for people with good skin elasticity.
- Recovery after a liposuction is usually fast and uncomplicated.
- Usually, people can get back to light exercise in 3 to 7 days and are fully recovered after 2 to 3 weeks.
- Patients put on compression garments for the healing and shaping process.
- Liposuction gently reduces fat and works especially well on people with little fat and smooth skin.
- When the skin is too lax, someone might find that the wrinkling or higher sagging from liposuction isn’t an effective solution which is why it’s not the best choice for all people.
Arm lift Surgery Risks
Complications that can arise from an arm lift include those typical of surgery plus specific problems with this type of procedure.
- Scarring
- Infection
- Bleeding or Hematoma
- Poor Wound Healing
- Changes in Skin Sensation
- Asymmetry or Irregular Contours
- Seroma (Fluid Accumulation)
- Blood Clots
- Anaesthesia Risks
Arm lift after Weight Loss
When a person loses significant weight, the upper arms may develop saggy skin that does not improve, whether through diet or exercise. Surgically removing the extra skin of the arms through an arm lift (brachioplasty) is a common solution for people who want to improve their arm and body shapes following weight loss.
Why an Arm Lift After Someone Loses Weight?
- A lot of people who lose a lot of weight notice loose “batwing” skin under their arms.
- Having loose skin on the body can make someone feel uncomfortable, aware of hygiene and health and often embarrassed.
- Exercise works best for building muscles, but it cannot repair stretched skin.
- Arm lift corrective surgery makes your arms look slimmer and in proportion with your changed body.
