Aplastic anemia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma are some of the cancers and disorders of the blood that continue to affect the people of Zambia. The health care services in Zambia have come a long way in the years but treatments like Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) are still limited. Consequently many patients and families are looking for more advanced treatment options overseas.
Get StartedThe Guardian reports that: https://www.theguardian.com/
Millions of people in Zambia suffer from blood disorders. It is estimated that 4-5 million Zambians are carriers of the sickle cell trait and thousands have sickle cell disease, lymphoma, leukemia, aplastic anemia and other severe haematological diseases which may need advanced therapies including bone marrow transplantations.
The reasons why India is preferred are:
The bone marrow transplant cost in India:
Indian hospitals offer complete transplant services for both adults and kids.
The use of bone marrow transplants is limited to specific diseases
Conditions treated with BMT:
High dose chemotherapy is followed by the collection, storage and reinfusion of the patient's own stem cells.
Stem cells come from a matched sibling or an unrelated donor.
Half-matched family donors can be utilized in cases where a fully matched donor is not found.
Stem cells are extracted from umbilical cord blood units that are stored.
