The patients may also decide to have a skin lesion removal because the individual does not like the way that it looks or appear on the body.
What Preparations are required, prior to this Surgical Procedure?
The following preparations may be done before the patients undergoing a Skin Lesion Removal procedure:
- The surgeons may access the individual’s medical history for extracting information related to the overall health status including the medicines that are being currently taken by the patients.
- Some medicines increase a patient’s chances of bleeding and it may be advised to discontinue them for a period of time before the surgery is being done.
- Blood tests may be done for determining if there is a bleeding tendency or any other medical condition that avoids the patients from undergoing any surgery.
- Normally local anesthesia is required; the patients must inform the physician if they are allergic to any local anesthetics, lidocaine, etc.
- Avoid application of any deodorant, cosmetics, or topical medicines on the site, before the individual undergoes the surgery.
- It is more preferable for the individual to quit smoking and use any nicotine-based products, for a while, before they undergo surgery.
- The patients must avoid the intake of any alcoholic drinks for a period of time, as instructed by the doctors.

What does the procedure of benign skin lesions involve?
Treatment generally depends on the size of the lesion, how deep it is and where it is on the body. Benign skin lesion removal generally takes place under local anesthetic.
Depending on the benign skin lesion to be removed, the patients may experience one of the following procedures:
- Partial removal: Partial removal involves where the patient’s surgeon shaves the lesion off at its base so it is at the level of the surrounding skin. This technique may be combined with the other technique called cautery which stops the bleeding and seals the skin. This partial removal method is used for lesions such as skin tags, ‘shallow’ moles, and keratosis.
- Complete removal: Complete Removal involves the entire lesion to be removed surgically. The surgeon will remove the lesion and some of the tissue around it and the patients may require stitches afterward. This is a technique is generally used for lesions which are suspected to be cancerous or for the larger moles.
- Freezing (Cryotherapy): Freezing involves freezing off the lesion with the liquid nitrogen and it can be used for the removal of skin tags, keratosis, and warts. The liquid nitrogen is applied to the lesion for approximately about 10 seconds. A blister will be formed which, when falls off, will take the lesion along with it.
- Curettage: Curettage is where the surgeon will gently scoop away the lesion and is usually used for warts. It is usually combined with cautery or cryotherapy.

What are the results expected of the benign skin lesion removal?
The site treated may be raised and red for a while. If the patients have had stitches the doctors will recommend them to come back in to have them removed. Dissolvable stitches will generally disappear after the 14 days of the surgery. Pain is generally minimal and can be managed and countered with the help of pain relief. Depending on the sort of lesion the patients have had removed and where it is on their body, the surgeon may recommend the patients to avoid stretching the skin in the area where surgery has taken place while they still have stitches on the area. For 48 hours after surgery, the patients will need to keep their wound dry and then gently clean the wound daily after that. The patients may also be required to keep the treated area of skin out of the sun.
