Meningioma Treatment

Meningioma

A generally non-cancerous tumor that originate from the membranes around the brain and the spinal cord. Although it is not properly known, what particularly causes a meningioma. Many a times Radiation therapy, certain female hormones and  human genetics play an essential role in causing meningioma. In most of the cases generally, the condition of meningioma is non-cancerous which means that it does not always lead to cancer.

What is Meningioma?

A generally non-cancerous tumor that originate from the membranes around the brain and the spinal cord. Although it is not properly known, what particularly causes a meningioma. Many a times Radiation therapy, certain female hormones and  human genetics play an essential role in causing meningioma. In most of the cases generally, the condition of meningioma is non-cancerous which means that it does not always lead to cancer.

Most meningiomas evolve quite gradually,  even they do not  depict any specific symptoms for years. But certain instances,  daily lives effects on  Brain tissue, specific nerves and vessels  which can lead to critical disability. Womens are mostly prone to the men in humus, and are often recognise at later old ages comma but certainly a meningioma can occur at any age it does not have specific age criteria Meningioma generally grow very slowly and it generally shows no proper signs and symptoms, they do not always need spontaneous diagnosis and treatment and can be managed over time.

Like most of the brain tumors, the cause of meningioma is still not properly known. Radiation is generally the only environment risk which tends to cause menimgiomas. A very less number of meningioma brain tumors result into rare genetic conditions like the rare condition of Neurofibromatosis which is the types 2   and popular for increasing the risk of meningioma and other kind of brain tumors.

Hormones are also closely related with meningiomas and  have certain specific cells which are called as receptors which tends to interact with the hormones which includes certain hormones like progesterone and Androgen and most specifically oestrogen. It has been noticed that many a time meningiomas evolve faster during the time of pregnancy. Many researchers are looking at the participation of hormone in the evolvement of meningiomas to know the significance and impact of this.

There are three types of Meningiomas-Page Image

Meningiomas can be classified into grades 1, 2 or 3.

Grade 1-   Grade 1Meningioma is the most regular type of meningiomas which is quite slow evolving and there are fewer chances of it  to come back after the treatment.

Grade 2- Grade 3  Meningioma is a very slow evolving kind of meningioma but there ate good chances of it to occur again even after the treatment.

Grade 3- Grade 3 meningioma is one of the rare type of meningioma, it evolves rapidly and has very high chances to recurr even after the treatment.

Symptoms of Meningiomas-

  • Focal seizures can also occur by meningioma which overlying on the cerebrum of the brain.
  • Hearing loss of also takes place due to meningiomas and buzzing or ringing sound frequently appears in ears.
  • Loss of smell also takes place as one of the symptom of meningiomas
  • Short term memory loss is also one of the complicated symptom of meningiomas.
  • Vision is also affected in meningiomas  as object appear blurry and double vision can also occur.
  • There is pain and weakness in arms and legs caused by mainly tumors which overlie on the parasagital front parietal location.

Diagnosis of meningioma

Although, it is not easy to diagnose meningiomas for various reasons. Because mostly meningiomas are slow-evolving tumors and generally causes meningiomas in adults, symptoms can be so stubborn that the patient and/or doctor may contribute them to the regular signs of aging process.  Relating to the worries is that some symptoms and signs are linked with meningiomas are  also because of certain other medical conditions.

When a patient signifies very slow increasing symptoms of mental illness , new type of seizures or persistent headaches or if there is proof of pressure in  the skull of head  like vomiting, bad swelling of the optic nerve of head in the back of the eye as  the beginning step should be a complete  neurological estimation, followed by radiological techniques, if necessary.

Complicated imaging techniques can support diagnose process of meningiomas. Diagnostic tool kit involve  Computed Tomography or what we call CT or CAT scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI are performed in order to diagnose meningiomas. Intrao-perative Magnetic Resonance Imaging  is also utilised in the process  surgery to  monitor the tissue biopsies and  removal of tumour.  Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is utilised to diagnose  the tumor's chemical profile and clarify the nature of the lesions producing which are seen on the MRI.

There are certain times when  the only alternative to make  accurate diagnosis of the meningioma is by a biopsy. The neurosurgeon carries the biopsy, and the pathologist performs the final diagnosis, analysing whether the tumor is benign tumor or maligna tumor  and grading is specified to it accordingly

Treatment of Meningioma

Surgical methods-

In surgical method of treating meningioma, surgeons work  to remove the meningioma completely from the body. Although,  because a meningioma can take place  near many smooth structures in the brain or the  spinal cord, it isn't always easy  to remove the complete tumor during surgery. In certain cases, surgeons separate as much of the meningioma as they can possibly in the process of surgery.

The kind of treatment, if any, you require  after surgery relies on various factors.

If no viewable tumor persists, then no subsequent  treatment may be required essentially. If the tumor is of benign kind  and only a tiny piece retained, then your doctor may suggest periodic follow-up scans only. In certain cases, small elements of  tumors can be treated with a kind  of radiation treatment generally called as stereotactic radiosurgery.

If the tumor is of  malignant type, then yoy will require radiation process for treatment.

Radiation therapy-

The aim of radiation therapy is to damage any retaining meningioma cells and minimise the probability of your meningioma may occur again. Radiation therapy consumes  a bit machine to goal at  high-powered and energised  energy beams at the specific tumor cells.

Progress in radiation therapy enhance  the dose of radiation to the meningioma and also reduce the radiation to healthy tissue. Radiation therapy alternative for meningiomas involve :

  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) which  is a kind of radiation process that has goals varioua beams of dynamic radiation at a certain point. Unkike to its name, radiosurgery doesn't inhibits scalpels or precise  incisions. Radiosurgery generally performed  in an outpatient setting in some  hours. Radiosurgery may be an alternative  for people with meningiomas that can't be separated with conventional or traditional surgery or for meningiomas that keeps on occuring again despite treatment.
  • Fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy causes radiation in little  fractions over a, such as one treatment proess for a day for 30 days. This process can also  be used for tumors which are quite big for radiosurgery or those in a place that can't exhibit  the high intensity and concentration  of radiosurgery like  near the optic nerve.

  • Meningioma can also be treated by medicinal procedure of chemotherapy and certain other methods like hypnosis, massage, acupuncture, relaxation and some other relaxation and healing exercises.
